How to Journal

Updated: Jan 28, 2020

With the New Year just starting, this is a great time to think about what you want to accomplish in the New Year and figure out how you would like to achieve it.

A journal can go a long way in helping you set new goals for 2020 – here’s how:

Separate your goals into long term and short term categories

Most people fall in love with results, and hate the process. This is counter-productive to achieving your goals. Often, the process seems too long and daunting. A good way to set yourself on the right path is to break the process down into bite-sized pieces. Separate your goals into immediate (a month), short term (6 months to a year), and long term (5-10 year) goals. Note your goals down in your journal so you have a ready reckoner when you need it.

Draw your goals

If you are a visual learner, use your journal to draw your goals checklist. Sketch pictures to go along with your goal name, make a flow chart to visualize what you hope to achieve, use graphics to list rewards, color-code sections, and track your progress with colorful imagery.

Create a vision board in your journal

A vision board is a spread wherein you display the images of the goals and results you hope to achieve. It is based on the law of attraction and allows you to manifest your best life. Choose a centrefold page in your journal, and stick images of the life goals you want to focus on. This page will be a colorful and visual reminder of the happiness you are working towards.

Make an action plan

Plan, not to fail. Fail not, to plan. Use your journal to make a detailed daily action plan based on achieving the goals you have set for yourself in 2020. If fitness is one of your goals, chalk in time to work out in your daily action plan. It is the little things that you do every day that bring about the big changes in life.

Adapt, improvise, overcome

Writing down your goals is just the first step. As the days go by, it is important for you to keep track of your progress, reflect, change what needs to be changed, and overcome any hurdles you are faced with. In order to be able to do this, it is essential that you journal daily. This will allow you to revisit your goals and attempts, identify patterns, and track the outcome of your efforts.

Set aside a little time to update your journal daily, and extra time over the weekend to plan ahead.
